The counties of Britain, and Hampshire is prominent in this respect, would be very much the poorer, if its musical life consisted entirely of listening to professionals, however splendid their standards. It is vital that as many as possible. especially of the younger generation, get pleasure from making music themselves. It is, therefore, doubly gratifying to find the virility, musical competence and quite remarkable standard achieved by The Hampshire Youth Concert Band. Formed in 1965 by John Knight, Head of Brass Band Music for the Hampshire Education Authority, it achieved the title of CHAMPION YOUTH BAND OF GREAT BRITAIN in London in 1968. Not everyone, of course, thinks that competitive events are necessarily a good thing in every circumstance. The balance of opinion undoubtedly is that, at the very least, young instrumentalists can learn a great deal from appearing in public in these conditions. They learn from the errors and achievements of other competitors, and, of course, their own also. By its continued success in the National Championships the Band advanced progressively to merit its promotion to the Championship grade. The standard it has attained means that it is in demand increasingly at concerts. Its programmes denote both technical efficiency and a high degree of ambitious planning. The Band has undertaken tours abroad, when concerts were given in Austria, France, Germany, Holland and Sweden. It has been featured on Radio and Television and whilst abroad it broadcast on Radio Hilversum. lt's Musical Director, John Knight, saw service with the RAF when he was progressively Solo Cornet of the Fighter Command Band and its Band Sergeant. He studied at the London College of Music and has been teaching in Hampshire since 1947.
