DJ Mix – Swarm Intelligence

Notes

A loop-based DJ mix of field, contact and electromagnetic recordings. These were captured using a Zoom H4N and an assortment of microphones including binaural, coil pickup and piezo models.

The inspiration for this mix is twofold. On one hand are the technology-driven techno mixes of recent years such as Hawtin’s DE9 Transitions, Umfeld by Jochem Paap and Surgeon’s This Is For You Shits. On the other, is a love of sound in it’s rawest form.

The result is an hour-long mix, anchored in techno but built from looped recordings of everyday surroundings. Effect processing was limited to that found on a DJ mixer - filters, EQ, reverb and delay - and recordings were blended together with the same tools and techniques DJ use to mix songs.
