These “Stringed Sculptures” were created during the 1970s by Belgian kinetic artist Pol Bury, born 1922. Each instrument is conceived with a specific number of strings (6, 12, 13, 17, 21, 25, 26, 33, 58, 82) and frets made of wooden spheres or sticks. A visually striking work, these sculptures allude to a mathematical-based, Pythagorean tuning, but are actually in free tuning. In the accompanying flexidisc, Bury demonstrates the instruments, describing number of strings and frets, and playing them with sticks.
