"My group project, the 4/4ths Quartet from 1999, was an attempt to fuse ambient noise with free jazz. This is improvisation at it's furthest point away from rehearsed music. The group members are playing free simultaneously, inside & outside of structure, losing their way and occasionally finding it again. Some of my electronics were a conscious attempt at recreating the sound of Dr. Patrick Gleeson's synth contributions in Herbie Hancock's fusion group (i.e. "Sextant"). Sun Ra's Arkestra provided another model. Ernest Carter's percussion and ethnic instruments were looped and live-processed in different ways. This is a precursor to the music I would do later with De Fenestra, but Rich Moore's guitar and Troy Carlton's bass often lock into a more "rock" structure and give this music a rather unique sound, somewhere between free/fusion jazz, post punk and noise. None of this was ever released and it remains some of my rarest music!"
